UWE Bristol internship scheme 2024–2025
Due to high demand, the Internship Scheme has been temporarily closed to any new requests and nominated internships. We only have funding remaining for any internships that are currently advertised on InfoHub (login required).
About the scheme
Our internship scheme offers exciting opportunities to participate in a paid internship and gain valuable work experience. With opportunities available in a range of sectors and the chance to find your own internship, you can find something to suit you.
Internships are a great way to expand your skill set, improve your professional network, and can help you to consider the type of work that is right for you in the future. Your employer will mentor you and provide you with the support and knowledge to enable a successful internship.
148 hour part-time internships
Our 148-hour part-time internships allow you to work up to 12 hours per week for approximately 12 weeks alongside your studies and other commitments.
These internships suit project work that can be delivered flexibly and remotely where appropriate. Considering your timetable, other commitments and needs of the business, you should discuss and create a working agreement between you and your employer.
Who can take part?

- UK domiciled graduates who graduated from an undergraduate degree course in 2024.
- International students currently studying a Bachelors, Masters or PhD course; see information below.
- Foundation year students completing UWE Bristol-accredited degrees in partnership with further education colleges are eligible providing you have evidence that you are continuing your studies with UWE Bristol in September 2025.

- UK domiciled students on a postgraduate course, including Master's and PhD students
- International graduates
Other considerations

- You can take part in one internship per academic year.
- International students are responsible for ensuring they are working within their Visa requirements. Please see the working during your studies page and contact an Immigration Advisor with any queries.
- The funding is limited and is allocated on a first come, first served basis. The scheme can close at any time when available funding is allocated.
Working hours and wages
- The scheme is for a total of 148 hours. We recommend that you work up to 12–13 hours per week for a total of approximately 12 weeks.

Arranging your own internship
Approaching organisations speculatively or using your existing contacts and networks shows you are innovative and proactive and offers you the opportunity to explore opportunities that may not have been advertised.
Once you have approached an organisation, they should email the Internships Team on your behalf at uweinternships@uwe.ac.uk to formalise the arrangement.
All business sectors are eligible. Don't restrict your search to jobs directly related to your degree subject or you'll miss out on some amazing opportunities. Your internship must be either project-based or add value to your CV and include an element of training and/or mentoring.
The internship should give you a meaningful opportunity to build skills, knowledge and confidence in a professional area of work.
Speculative applications
View information about making speculative applications on Career Toolkit (login required).
You may want to use this statement in your speculative application:
"My university, the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol), is currently offering a part-time Internship Scheme, which offers a 100% subsidy of £1,864.80 to companies/organisations that employ an undergraduate student for a period of 148 hours over 12 weeks (12-13 hours per week). I am very interested in working at XX within the XX areas/field/job/sector and would very much appreciate it if you would be able to offer me an internship.
Interns must be paid at a minimum of £12.60 per hour via PAYE and the subsidy can be claimed back from UWE Bristol when the internship finishes.
Further details about the scheme are available on the UWE Bristol website. If you have any questions, please contact the Internships Team directly at uweinternships@uwe.ac.uk."
CV help
We offer a wide range of resources to support with CVs and applications including our useful CV Cycle resource. If you would like feedback on your CV, use our CV360 tool.
During your internship
During your internship you are employed by the company not UWE Bristol. Your employer will recruit you on the same basis as they would any other member of staff and you will be paid directly by them through PAYE on a weekly or monthly basis.
We will provide the employer with access to an agreement that needs to be electronically signed by you, your employer and UWE Bristol. We recommend that your internship employer provides you with a separate agreement to cover any company policies not included in the UWE Bristol internship agreement.
You will be required to complete a short pre-internship questionnaire and a feedback form at the end of the internship.
You will accrue 16.25 hours of paid leave during your 148-hour internship. Your holiday entitlement, working hours and sickness absence must be arranged according to your employer's policies and procedures.
Tax and National Insurance contributions
The figure paid to you may be subject to tax and National Insurance contributions. Sometimes you will be placed on an emergency tax code and what is deducted from your net pay is more than you should be paying. This will depend on whether you have another job and how much tax you have already paid in the current tax year. Find further information about paying tax as a student and how you can claim a refund if you think you have paid too much.
If you have any questions or concerns during your internship, please contact us at uweinternships@uwe.ac.uk.
Employability Bursary
The UWE Bristol Employability Bursary aims to support lower-income UK undergraduate students to access a range of activities. Activities aim to add value to your student experience and help you to achieve a better graduate outcome. An internship is an eligible activity.
When your employer confirms your internship with us, we will send you a link to complete an eligibility calculator. The Student Money Service will check your details and if you are eligible for the bursary you will receive payment just before your start your internship.
Bursaries are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and you must meet eligibility criteria.
