MAMBO (Musculoskeletal management, Measurement, Behaviour change and Outcome) theme

MAMBO conducts research that identifies and addresses the needs of patients with musculoskeletal conditions and informs delivery of services to optimize outcomes.

The group has expertise in a range of research methodologies and draws upon a wide range of disciplines including medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, podiatry, psychology, radiography and sports rehabilitation. There is a strong bio-psychosocial tradition with an emphasis on applied research, where the impact on patients and their families is key.

Research focus

Our multidisciplinary research focuses on the assessment and management of a range of acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions, particularly in rheumatology and orthopaedics. Understanding people’s experiences, and identifying and addressing their priorities are fundamental underlying principles. Strong collaborations with patients therefore permeate our research activities.

Our expertise in measurement and outcomes includes identifying patient priorities; developing and evaluating patient-reported outcome measures; monitoring long-term conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and hip replacements; and the use of technologies to understand the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system, including analysis of movement.

Research into management approaches focuses particularly on supported self-management strategies, enhancing physical activity and addressing complex psychosocial issues. Examples include supported self-management approaches in osteoarthritis, hypermobility spectrum disorder and rheumatoid arthritis. We maximise the integration of evidence into practice through the development and delivery of training opportunities with our undergraduate students and clinical colleagues. Strong local, national and international collaborations further develop the impact of our research.
