Project summary
Bath & North East Somerset (B&NES) Council, supported by the West of England Combined Authority, was awarded £1.6m by the Department for Transport, to pilot interventions in the Somer Valley aimed at improving health and wellbeing through active travel, as well as bringing wider social, environmental and economic benefits. The B&NES project is entitled The Active Way.
Active travel is defined within the project as walking, wheeling (using a wheelchair, for example), and cycling. The social prescription of active travel involves referring a person into transport-related lifestyle interventions to improve their health and wellbeing. Referrals will be made by health providers, community and voluntary service organisations and self-referral. The interventions include: cycle training, cycle loans, led rides, led walks, bike maintenance courses and workshops, wearable activity-monitoring devices and linked one-to-one motivational sessions.
UWE Bristol's role is to support B&NES Council in the monitoring and evaluation of the Active Way project.
