Project summary
CRAFTeD was a research project established to ‘co-produce’ a methodology and outline plan to decarbonise the freight system of South West England by 2050. Through a ‘coproduction’ process, the project identified attitudes, behaviours and practices in the freight sector in the Southwest and how those would need to change in order to achieve complete decarbonisation.
CRAFTeD was a collaboration between UWE Bristol (Professor Graham Parkhurst, Dr Daniela Paddeu) and the University of Bristol (Dr Ges Rosenberg, Dr Neil Cahart, Emeritus Professor Colin Taylor), supported by a number of public and private sector organisations including CILT, Arup, Mott McDonald, Bristol Port Company, Bristol City Council, the West of England Combined Authority, the South West Infrastructure Partnership, Highways England. CRAFTeD was funded under the ‘Decarbonising UK Freight Transport’ initiative.
The first stage of the project reviewed freight demand-side trends and technologies for decarbonisation. The project then hosted stakeholder ‘co-creation events’ which developed, tested and enhanced the framework for route-mapping. In the final stage of the work, the transferability of the method to other regions was explored through engagement with stakeholders drawn from outside the South West.
