In the seminar “The privatisation of public space: a literature review”, David Littlefield and Mike Devereux discuss their current research commissioned by Grosvenor Estates, the developer/owner of London’s Mayfair and the centre of Liverpool, discussing the complex relations between the public and private sector within urban spaces that we perceive as typically accessible to the ‘public'.

A seminar presentation by Ytzen Van Der Werf, graduate tutor and PhD student, discussing his research into the variance in valuation of property within pensions funds drawing on interviews with both valuers and investors in the UK property market.

Professor Lamine Mahdjoubi, co-director of CABER and an EPSRC reviewer, chair and member of peer review panels, as well as a former AHRC reviewer, discusses architecture and built environment research funding opportunities, including those from Research Councils UK (RCUK), charities and industry, and grant application processes. He is joined by Dr Patrick Manu who gives a short presentation on his recent success in securing an EPSRC First Grant.

A seminar presentation by Professor Bill Gething, co-director of CABER, giving an overview of CABER and introduction to its theme ‘Sustainable design, construction and performance’, covering current projects on energy literacy, building occupants’ use of heating controls, an exemplar low carbon housing development, impact in practice on comfort and heating costs of fitting external wall insulation and a recently won study for BEIS (Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy).

A seminar presentation by Dr Fidel Meraz, articulating a conversation between Heidegger’s approaches to place and an anthropological profile of the architectural place, rooted in the ontology of architecture of Ingarden. The seminar explores a methodology that validates phenomenology as philosophical tool to approach architecture and frame it within clearly identifiable limits.
