Architecture Research Group (ARG)

The Architecture Research Group (ARG) consolidates UWE Bristol’s growing achievements in architectural research whilst supporting future endeavours in creative, design-led and practice-based research and wide ranging theoretical approaches. These include the more discursive approaches of humanities and social sciences, history, theory, philosophy, poetry, art criticism, material and design praxis-oriented approaches, the speculative methodologies of design, design research, practice-based research, and architectural technology, in order to combine best research practice, promote ambition and enable high-quality research for the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2029).

Research outputs from the group are diverse and include the non-textual, the performative, the philosophical and the spatial alongside the more empirical or quantifiable research practices that architecture demands. The group focuses on the types of knowledge and insight that architects create through design thinking and distinct ‘designerly ways of knowing’.
