Professor plays key role in formation of Europe’s first conference for minoritised life scientists

A professor from UWE Bristol has played a leading part in organising Europe’s first conference supporting scientists from marginalised and underrepresented backgrounds.
Emmanuel Adukwu, deputy head of the School of Applied Sciences, is chair of the steering committee for the Minoritised Life Scientists’ Future Forum taking place in Birmingham.
The academic, a Professor of Applied Microbiology, is also among the keynote speakers and facilitators at the inaugural event being held between March 31 and April 2 at the International Conference Centre.
Supported by funding from the Medical Research Council and Wellcome, the pioneering event is dedicated to empowering underrepresented voices in the life sciences, offering more than 200 hours of talks, workshops, mentoring, and opportunities for academic and professional development.
Prof Adukwu said: “The underrepresentation of minoritised scientists in senior roles is a major concern for the future of UK science.
“While efforts have been made to tackle these inequalities, we must create spaces that build genuine connections, mentorship, and opportunities for collaboration across all career stages.
“This forum is not just about sharing research; it’s about creating a lasting impact that helps marginalised and underrepresented scientists thrive in academia and beyond.”
Supporting the formation and delivery of the Minoritised Life Scientists’ Future Forum is Oluwadamilola Okeyoyin, a UWE Bristol doctoral student who is co-chair of the Outreach, Engagement and Social impact team.
The 1,500 capacity event is designed for life scientists at all career stages from undergraduate students to early-career researchers and senior academics, aiming to build a vibrant and supportive environment for professional development and networking.
The Future Forum aims to address barriers by providing a platform for visibility, mentorship, and professional growth, helping to bridge the gap between students and established academics.
