We know that times are tough for everyone at the moment, so we want to reassure you that we are committed to providing any support you need if you’re struggling.
The tips and advice below, as well as information about specific schemes and programmes that can help, should ensure that you feel more confident navigating student life despite worries around the cost of living.
There are no silly questions when it comes to money, so don’t be afraid to ask for help.

Accommodation and bills
With all the talk of rising energy prices, we know you might be feeling worried about how you’re going to pay the bills. Remember, if you are living in university-managed accommodation, then your utility bills (water, heating and lighting) are included in the cost.
However, if you are living in private accommodation, then this will be something you need to take into consideration. Make sure you know if you are entitled to any government support with energy bills this winter.
Every little helps when it comes to reducing energy usage, so we have opened up our shower facilities on our campuses so you can use these for free. Here are some further tips on saving energy at home.
Despite all the support available, we know that some of you may still be struggling to pay your bills. Therefore, we have made some changes to the eligibility criteria for our Student Support Fund. This should provide additional help for those of you who need it most.
Travel and transport
Getting around on two wheels is a great way to cut costs, as well as being something that is not only good for your health but good for the planet as well. Here at UWE Bristol, you can take advantage of the bike loan scheme, and cyclists can make use of showers and cycle storage facilities on campus.
Public transport can also be a cost-efficient way to travel, either to and from campus or when visiting friends or family across the country. You are entitled to student prices on bus, rail and coach travel.
Food shopping
We’ve been working closely with the Students’ Union to implement a number of benefits, including the Bring Your Own Bowl initiative. Check out this extensive round-up from the SU to find out more.
We have a range of food outlets on our campuses, where food prices are currently frozen. We will also be offering a discounted Eat Well For Less special, served until 19:00 in Onezone and Glenside Hub, and until 18:00 in the Bower Hub.
One of the most cost-effective ways of eating on campus is to bring your meals with you, and there are microwaves and hot water available for you to use free of charge. Microwaves are located in the library (D block), Starbucks (E block) and the Student Centre at The Farmhouse at Frenchay Campus, within The Hub at Glenside, and within Traders (A block) at Bower Ashton, City Campus.

Paid work
We know that for many students, finding part-time work to help supplement their income is a necessity. However, we do urge you to consider how much paid work you can commit to without it impacting on your studies, or your own wellbeing. Also, if you’re an international student then you may need to take into account any restrictions that are in place.
Take the time to consider how much work you can take on, and if it is something you are looking to do, then the Students’ Union JobShop or Infohub vacancies are great places to start. If you need any support with applications, CVs or anything careers-related, the careers team is on hand to help.
Technology and equipment
We know that the start of term can be a costly time, with all the new books and equipment you need to buy. Did you know you can borrow laptops free of charge on a short-term basis? And you can also book computers to use at various sites across campus.
Before you rush out to buy any textbooks for your course, why not see if you can borrow them from our libraries instead?
For students on placements, the Students’ Union has developed a uniform swap shop, so that you have a more budget-friendly and eco-friendly option.
Warm places to study
If you’re looking for a warm place to work, and are trying to reduce your energy use at home, why not pop to one of the libraries. They’re open long hours and are not only a great place to study or read, but you can also charge your phone or laptop for free. Both Frenchay and Glenside libraries also have free access to microwaves and hot water.
We will also be extending the opening hours of some of our buildings so students have additional access to facilities and places to study.
Free activities
Living on a budget doesn’t mean you need to stay at home 24/7. In fact, it’s really important for your mental health and wellbeing that you continue to get out and about, catching up with old friends or meeting new ones.
VisitBristol is a great website to find out what’s happening in the city, and has blog posts containing suggestions of things you can do for free.
The Centre for Music has free membership for students and this gives you access to various playing and singing groups, rehearsal rooms and studio space.
Our MOVE programme is also free to students and provides a huge range of activities and sessions, including netball, football, yoga, aerial hoop and lots more.

Sustainable period products
The Students' Union are providing free period products via a new weekly stall at every campus site for students and staff to collect natracare (plastic-free) single-use products.
They can also sign up to a free sustainable period product trial. We also are providing more free sanitary products for all students and staff in toilets on all campuses.
