Beginner's climbing course

Our two-stage climbing programme involves an induction session and consolidation session. Inductions are taught in small groups of no more than six people. You don't need any previous experience in climbing but participants must be over 16 years old.

Sessions take place at the indoor climbing wall at the Centre for Sport on Frenchay Campus. Once both parts of the course are complete, you will be able to use the climbing wall on a recreational basis.

How to book

Sessions cost £25 for the induction and consolidation.

Outdoor climbing

Discover the thrill of climbing outdoors with UWE Bristol’s professionally taught climbing course. The exciting course will take place in Bristol at the Avon Gorge, on the sea wall section of the crag. Emphasis will be put on climbing time rather than the teaching of rope-work skills.

Sessions are open to anyone over the age of ten irrespective of ability. A parent or legal guardian must be present for participants aged under 18.

Cost and booking

Sessions cost £20 for adults and £15 for juniors (17 and under).

Participants will be responsible for arranging their own transport to and from the Avon Gorge.

Sessions run from May to September.

Contact Alexander George at alexander3.george@uwe.ac.uk for full available dates and further information.

Weather and session cancellation

We may need to cancel sessions due to dangerous weather conditions, for example heavy rain, electrical storms and strong winds.

The instructor will make a decision prior to the session but participants can call UWE Bristol Sport if in doubt. Tel: +44 (0)117 32 86200

During a session, the instructor may stop the session if conditions become dangerous. The instructor’s decision is final. An instructor will remain with the group until all minors are collected.
