About the event

The natural world is full of amazing, mesmerising and, sometimes, tragic stories.

Reflecting on 10 years of working in the natural history filmmaking industry, Estelle Cheuk will share stories on what she has learnt about finding and filming animal and conservation stories from all over the world, the highs and lows of shoots in extreme places, and the challenges that come with communicating tough conservation topics to a broad and diverse audience.

Estelle grew up on the coast of Northern Ireland, where she developed a love of the ocean and its wildlife. Studying an undergraduate in Human Sciences and a MSc in Science Communication, Estelle became increasingly interested in conservation and the important role humans play in protecting the natural world. During her career, she has tracked the illegal songbird trade through Indonesia, flown with migrating ibis over the Alps, walked among African elephants and filmed sea-faring snakes.

Hoping to educate and inspire others to care for wildlife and wild places, Estelle joined the BBC first as a trainee science radio producer for the World Service, making its weekly magazine programme “Science in Action”. She then moved to the Natural History Unit in 2015, and since, has worked across various wildlife behaviour, conservation and presenter-led series including Attenborough’s Planet Earth III.
