MSc HRM work-based research project

Our human resources (HR) work-based research project offers your organisation a free resource to explore a specific HR issue within the organisation. You will benefit from fresh insight and ideas and additional capacity from our students.

Bristol Business School has been recognised as a Centre of Research Excellence by the UK’s Chartered Institute of personnel and Development (CIPD), and our popular MSc Human Resources Management course has a reputation for developing graduates who are ready to succeed in the workplace.

Students will gain valuable insight into a HR department as part of their work-based research project.

What’s involved?

Work-based research projects last ten weeks and will usually start in late May. Students are not paid but if the project work requires extensive travel, we ask you to meet travel costs.

Hosting a work-based project will involve a commitment to oversee the project and meet regularly with the student to check on progress. Employers involved with the scheme have told us their projects have given a considerable return on their investment.

Examples of projects

  • Evaluation of the induction process
  • Recruitment and assessment centres for graduates
  • Exploring Internet recruitment
  • Investigation into staff turnover
  • The links between reward and retention
  • The impact of business change on learning needs
  • The role of development centres in improving leadership effectiveness

Stride Treglown case study

Stride Treglown have successfully hosted students on our MSc Human Resource Management course for the past eight years. They are one of the largest architectural practices in the UK, with over 60 years of experience and an impressively diverse portfolio.

"As a result of the student's findings and recommendations, we saved time and money by not implementing expensive review software (process focused). Instead we invested our time and energy in developing Team Leader capability (people focused) which was more important to staff."
