Learner Analytics privacy notice
UWE Bristol undergraduate students have their engagement with some learning resources recorded in the Learner Analytics system. This system creates engagement scores based on how often you have used the resources. This process is to help identify students who may require extra support as a change in engagement level can sometimes be a sign that a student is experiencing some difficulty.
Engagement levels may be shared with a Student Support Advisor who may then contact you. This is just to see if you are ok.
What data will UWE Bristol be using?
All of the data being used to create the engagement scores is data that the University already holds. The Learner Analytics system (MyEngagement) will note how often you:
- Log on to Blackboard
- Click to view course content on Blackboard
- Hand in a piece of coursework
- Submit coursework on Blackboard
- Take out a book from the library
- Access library e-resources and journals
- View the online reading list
- Print, scan or photocopy documents
- Log in to a UWE Bristol computer
- Attend lectures and other teaching activities
- Access a recorded lecture via Panopto
- Use Blackboard Collaborate to attend online teaching sessions
Other data that will be included as part of your profile will be name, university email address, programme of study, year of study, whether or not you are a care leaver and if you are an international student.
Legal bases
Your personal data will have already been collected by UWE Bristol to administer our educational relationship with you. It will be analysed using an algorithm to ascertain levels of engagement and the effectiveness of your educational experience. Where low levels of engagement with the University and its resources are identified you will be informed via an e-mail notification. Processing in this context is for the University’s public task to support learning and enhance educational experience through encouraging high engagement levels.
Subsequent intervention and any additional information will be based only upon your expressed consent.
How long do we keep your data?
UWE Bristol will only keep your engagement data in the MyEngagement system until you leave the university.
Automated decision making/profiling
An algorithm will be used to ascertain your level of engagement with the University, this is how the system will create your engagement levels. Only notification e-mails will be sent out every two weeks to those in the Low, Very Low and None categories. There will be no decisions or interactions made only by automated means and without your consent. These data analytics will never be used for academic assessment purposes; you will never be penalised for being in a lower engagement category.
