Reporting concerns

Student practice

For any concerns in practice or in the students progress and development either the student or Practice Assessor should contact the Academic Assessor directly or call the practice support line who will pass your details on to the relevant Academic Assessor. The Academic Assessor may arrange for a progress review meeting to take place. The concerns will be discussed openly with all parties and a clear plan of action and review date will be agreed on and documented.

If the issue cannot be resolved through the review meetings, then the sponsoring or seconding Trust/Organisation manager will be contacted.

Practice

You have a professional duty to report any concerns from placement or university regarding an individual’s safety. The Code (NMC, 2015) states that, as a registrant, you must ‘…act without delay if you believe that there is a risk to patient safety or public protection’. Information on what might constitute a concern is available on the NMC webpages.

Report and support tool

We have a report and support tool available for students if they've experienced something that has made them feel upset or uncomfortable.

Supervision and assessment

Find out more about supporting, supervising and assessing students in practice.

It is important that you have undertaken appropriate preparation to take on a role supporting a Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) student. All practice supervisors must have completed their preceptorship as a SCPHN practitioner before acting as a Practice Supervisor.

We encourage all practice supervisors and assessors to undertake training in supporting students whilst on placement. It is recommended that you complete the online self-study UWE Bristol course Support Students in Practice.

This course is self-directed learning which you can undertake over a period of three to four months. There are no specific times or dates to undertake this course but you must apply for a specific start date to be enrolled.

The Programme Team recommends that SCPHN Practice Assessors complete the Practice Assessor module before taking on the role. The module has been designed to meet the Standards for student supervision and assessment (SSSA) and to meet the needs of SCPHN Practice Assessors and educators supporting other post registration nurses.

There may be funding available for you to complete this, please contact your line manager or link tutor for more information.
