Date that this item was entered on to the web-site: 6th March 2009.   Interview with ceramic artist Gordon Baldwin York Museums Trust have commissioned NEVAC to produce a short film to play in the 2010 major retrospective exhibition of the work of Gordon Baldwin.  He is represented by the Barret Marsden Gallery in Lodon.  Their website describes Gordon as follows: Gordon Baldwin is one of Britain‘s most distinguished ceramic artists. His distinctive works combine sculptural form with abstract painterly marks. He has described his approach as ‘a non search for beauty’, finding most satisfaction in ‘forms which have a certain awkward resonance’, a more challenging purity and strength. His influences come from the achievements of Modernism rather than from ceramic tradition, and from poetry and music as much as aspects of painting and sculpture. The underlying formalism and discipline sensed in his work is due, in part, to his interest in chance operations (such as those used by Jean Arp or John Cage) and he will sometimes use these as a strategy to avoid conscious decision-making, leaving him open to discover new expressive possibilities. Born in 1932, Gordon Baldwin initially trained as a painter although his subsequent career as a ceramicist spans a period of more than fifty years. In recognition of his influential career and achievements he was awarded the OBE in 1992 and received an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Art, London in 2000. His work is represented in numerous public collections worldwide. Gordon was interviewed at his home and studio in Shropshire on 5th March 2009.
