Most of our cathedrals and abbey churches were built during the Middle Ages. In the years following the Norman Conquest a huge rebuilding programme started which continued through the next four centuries. The style slowly evolved from Norman into early English, decorated, and, in the middle of the fourteenth century, perpendicular.
